
Sunway College Johor Bahru is adding yet another feather in its cap by launching the Diploma in Hotel Management on 19 March 2009. Why now?
The service industry remains one of the biggest employers worldwide. Hospitality, being a major sector is labour-intensive and as Johor and the southern corridor gear-up for the future demand of human resources to feed the needs of hotels, resorts, theme parks, restaurants and retail establishments mushrooming in the coming years; a skilled and qualified workforce will be essential. This full-time course will equip students with the expertise they need to embark on a successful career path in the hospitality business. Through the unique combination of functional and academic content, the programme aims to develop individuals who meet the needs of the largely diverse hospitality industry. “Our approach is to offer experiential-based education by providing a broad-based ‘learning by doing’ culture. Students can expect an enriching learning experience through a myriad of methods for lesson delivery including classroom lectures, tutorials, case study, hands-on practical training and study field trips,” explained Linda Lim, Programme Coordinator. Also included in the course is a 20-week Supervised Work Experience where students put their learning into practice. Upon completion of the course, a Sunway College Johor Bahru Diploma in Hotel Management graduate will have the following, much sought-after knowledge and skills:
· understanding of the hospitality industry and its past, present and future trends · excellent customer service skills to ensure repeat business · business skills to contribute towards the profitability of the establishment · management techniques, leadership and specific technical job skills to act in a supervisory role · applicable knowledge in the use of IT related channels to improve product marketability · better adaptability towards the concept of teamwork and the hands-on management working way
The duration of the Diploma in Hotel Management is 2 years and 20 weeks, including the Supervised Work Experience. Successful diploma graduates may apply for direct entry into year 2 of the BSc (Hons) International Hospitality Management offered at Sunway University in affiliation with the prestigious Lancaster University (UK). To kick-start the course, Sunway College Johor Bahru will open its hospitality doors to interested students and the general public during its Open Days on 14 and 15 March 2009 (Saturday and Sunday) by conducting hospitality workshops throughout the day. Visitors can pick up tips on table setting, dining etiquette, colour coordination and even grooming pointers to create a personal style profile. A talk on Career Opportunities in Hotel Management will also be presented on 15 March 2009.
