A student hostel is being constructed by Sunway
College Johor Bahru to cope with the rising demand for accommodation as
the College’s population increases. The 4-storey hostel to be located
within the campus, is scheduled to be operational by January 2011.
College Principal Mrs Hor Poh Choo said the College projected an
increase of more than 1,000 students by next year, thus, creating a need
for student accommodation. “The current Students’ Houses that we have at
Austin Heights will no longer be enough for our students by then. We
also expect to have more international students in the years to come,”
she said adding that the hostel could accommodate approximately 480
students. The College now provides 8 Students’ Houses at Austin Heights,
a gated residential area which is about 5 minutes’ walk from the campus.
“The hostel building is designed to provide a safe, comfortable
and affordable living environment for students while pursuing their
studies at Sunway College Johor Bahru. It is also built on the
concept that promotes learning and social interaction among
students, besides the “home away from home” living environment,” she
said. She added that a piazza would be built between the blocks to
create a relaxed atmosphere within the hostel.

total of 68 units with 6 different layouts ranging from 64sqm to 105sqm
per unit. “Each unit will have 2 to 4 bedrooms that can accommodate 4 to
8 residents. The units will also be equipped with 2 bathrooms, water
heaters, a pantry, a dining hall and a living hall each,” she explained,
adding that internet access points would also be installed in every
unit. Mrs Hor continued saying that the other amenities such as a surau,
study rooms and multi-purpose rooms would be located at the ground
floor. She added that the building would be fully air-conditioned and
launderette services would be available for the convenience of the
residents. Students who are currently staying at the Students’
Houses are excitedly looking forward to the opening of this on-campus
hostel. One of the College students Teo Yong Xing, 19, said
that the new accommodation facility would attract more students to study
in the College. “Students will not need to worry about transport as the
hostel is located within the campus. The first year Diploma in Business
Administration student also said that the new building would definitely
enhance the image of the College.

As for first year Diploma in Hotel Management
student Hoo Hui Yen, 18, the hostel’s strategic location would be of
great convenience for students. “Besides that, other facilities like
recreation room and piazza will certainly make living in the hostel more
exciting. Furthermore, it is just a stone’s throw from the classrooms,
thus, students need not worry about waking up too early to catch a bus
or beat the traffic jam to get to College,” she said.

in as everyone would be housed under one roof. “The students will be
living together as a big family and we can get to know each other
better,” said the 21-year-old. Compared to living outside the campus,
Wan Azeera Naquiah said that she would feel more secure living in the
hostel since it would have a 24-hour security service.

enjoy privacy in their own rooms at the apartment-styled hostel while
living with many other friends. “It is also great to have internet ports
at every unit that enable us to go online at our own convenience,” said
