Sunway College Johor Bahru (SYCJB) has appointed Ms Ong Mei Mei as Director of Academics to oversee all academic matters of the College.

“Ms Ong’s work experience in the higher education industry has spanned more than 10 years and I trust Ms Ong will be able to help propel the College’s next phase of academic growth and development,” said Mrs Hor Poh Choo, principal of SYCJB.

Ms Ong found her place in the education industry immediately after graduation when she joined an education group in Singapore, marketing higher education programmes to both school leavers and working professionals.

“My initial work experience had given me invaluable insights to the world of education and I learned about the different education systems around the world through dealings with foreign universities,” she said.

Several years later, she took up the challenge of teaching and has not looked back since.

“Working with students is very rewarding and each day is different. We make learning exciting and open their minds to the world,” Ms Ong remarked.

Ms Ong joined SYCJB in 2005 as the Head of Diploma Programmes and worked hard to ensure the programmes were accepted by both universities and employers locally and regionally.

Over the years, Ms Ong had brought the diploma programmes to greater heights. The College successfully signed an articulation agreement with University  College Birmingham, UK enabling diploma in hotel management graduates to complete an honours degree in hospitality within 4 years.

“The Diploma in Hotel Management programme offered in our College provides insights into a wide range of management and specialist subjects to equip students with the expertise they need to embark on a successful career in the hospitality industry,” explained Ms Ong.

She added that the unique combination of functional and academic content, complemented by an industry-based approach allows students to meet the needs of the largely diverse service industry.

Other articulation agreements signed are with Cesar Ritz Colleges Switzerland and University of Waikato, New Zealand.

“We are proud that our Diploma in Business Administration has met the  expectations of the University of Waikato, which prides itself on its academic quality,” quoted Ms Ong.

In 2007, degree programme was added to Ms Ong’s portfolio. SYCJB offers Victoria University (VU) 3+0 twinning programmes specializing  in Accounting or Marketing. To date, there are approximately 150 VU students.

In her new role as the Director of Academics, Ms Ong’s main priority will be to continue SYCJB’s pursuit of academic excellence. This includes enhancing the rigour of teaching and quality assessment of all academic programmes as well as benchmarking SYCJB’s programmes against the best in the industry.

“I am fortunate to be working in SYCJB where there is an excellent work culture and be among colleagues who are passionate about their jobs and their calling for teaching,” said Ms Ong.

Ms Ong’s personal mission is to make studying in JB a first choice for students and their parents.

“By and large, SYCJB is a conducive place for students to pursue their studies as well as for people to work in. I am a direct beneficiary of the learning environment that the entire Sunway Group is promoting and this will eventually cascade to all students,” said Ms Ong.
