It
was a moment of glory for Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) student,
Tan Kang Yi, 19, when he was ranked top in Sunway College Johor
Bahru (SYCJB) with a Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of
98.15. This score had also put him in the top 1.9% worldwide.
“I
am relieved and happy at the same time. My elder brother, Tan Kang
Xiang, who was a 2009 AUSMAT student, also ranked top in the College
that year,” said Kang Yi.
Kang Xiang, who is currently pursuing MBBS at University of
Tasmania, Australia scored an impressive ATAR of 98.7.
“I
would say my brother’s stellar results had influenced me to pursue
AUSMAT at SYCJB. Plus, AUSMAT focuses on the holistic development of
individuals and valuable feedback through continuous assessments
which kept me driven all year long,” said Kang Yi, who is also keen
on pursuing medicine.
A
former tenant at one of the College’s student houses, he mentioned
that another reason he chose SYCJB was because it was near to his
home in Kluang and which enabled him to go home every weekend.
“Back then during my first few days of College, it did not take me
too long to realise the College has such a close-knit community of
students and extremely dedicated lecturers and staff. This had
helped to foster a friendly and conducive environment for studies
and also a healthy social life,” he said.
That motivated the young lad to serve the College as a Student
Ambassador to further develop his soft skills by organising college
activities and working closely with the College’s staff.
SYCJB AUSMAT coordinator Alan Teng reported that the performance of
20% of the 2010 AUSMAT cohort was ranked at top 10% among all AUSMAT
providers globally.
“This is by far the best results our students had produced since the
programme was offered in the year 2006,” said Teng.
Teng explained that AUSMAT is the Year 12 curriculum of Western
Australia. The Curriculum Council of Western Australia, on behalf of
the Government of Western Australia, oversees the quality
implementation of the curriculum.
“The AUSMAT is an internationally recognised pre-university
programme which prepares students to sit for the Tertiary Entrance
Examinations (TEE) and allows students to gain admission into all
Australian universities and other universities throughout the
world,” said Teng.
