Sunway College Residence, a student hostel, is constructed by Sunway
College Johor Bahru (SYCJB) to cope with the rising demand for
accommodation as the College’s population increases.
“Creating a ‘home away from home’ living environment, the 4-storey
hostel which is located within the campus is built based on the
concept of promoting social interaction among students in a learning
environment,” said College principal, Mrs Hor Poh Choo.
Hor
added that the hostel building is designed to provide a safe,
comfortable and conducive living environment for students while
pursuing their studies at the College.
The
hostel can accommodate 480 students and a piazza is built between
the blocks to create a relaxed atmosphere within the hostel.
The
hostel has a total of 68 units with 6 different layouts and there
are 2 to 4 bedrooms in each unit which can accommodate 4 to 8
residents. All units are fully furnished. Other amenities such as
surau, study room and multi-purpose hall are located on the
ground floor. The building is fully air-conditioned and launderette
services are available for the convenience of the residents. Free
WiFi internet service is also provided.
“Besides the 24-hour presence of our Sunway Auxiliary Police and
security personnels, we have also installed an effective network of
CCTV in the hostel as we place utmost importance on residents’
safety,” said Hor.
“With all these safety measures in place, I know my parents’ minds
are at ease,” said 18-year old resident Melissa Lawson from the
A-Level programme who chose to live in the hostel even though her
family is in JB because she wants to learn to be independent.
21-year old Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) student Gan Hwa Xiang
from Singapore said, “I’m a futsal coach for the College’s Futsal
Club and I stay back most days to train the players. Staying in the
hostel saves me a lot of time commuting as I still need to revise my
studies at night.”
Lim
Lisa, a 17-year old student from Kluang who is joining the Diploma
in Hotel Management programme in August said the hostel is one of
the deciding factors she chose to study in the College.
“Amenities such as clinic, bank and food outlets are easily and
conveniently available in the vicinity of the hostel. Furthermore,
there is also a shopping mall nearby where I can hang out with my
friends,” said Lim.
