| | Dear colleagues and students of Sunway,
As we herald the dawn of another year, I am awed by how far we have progressed. Our successes are mainly due to the efforts of all our staff and students who have worked with dedication and passion, ensuring that our institutions offer excellence in teaching and learning, and the support of these. Today, after 25 years, we are a leading University and Group of Colleges and you have certainly kept the Sunway banner flying high, charting international recognition and winning world awards. The next step is to definitely make our global presence felt.
The Chancellor of Sunway University cum the Founder of the Sunway Group, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, believes that people come before profits, and, as such, education extends far beyond the business realm. The success of the Sunway Education Group in contributing to education excellence surpasses rankings and enrolment numbers. Over the years, the Sunway Education Group under the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation has given generously in the form of scholarships and awards amounting to RM80 million since 1997 to more than 11,000 deserving scholars, an education which they otherwise would have been denied. I encourage us all to continue to contribute our part, be it in cash or kind, towards enriching and improving the lives of all who choose a Sunway education, and to make a difference where it matters.
2012 will be a special year as several new developments from various phases of our expansion plans will be unveiled, complementing the celebrations of Sunway education during its silver anniversary. We can look forward to the laying of the foundation stone for the new University building, the opening of the Graduate Centre and the Sunway International School (SIS) new building aside from the many exciting events for our institutions involving staff, students, and alumni. I am pleased to note academic events being organised to stimulate academic discourse and research, befitting of serious institutions of higher learning.
Just as we celebrate 25 awesome years, we must be ready to live up to the expectations of the next 25 years and beyond. As the world converges, we need to be fortified with the right skills and attitude to compete in the global arena. Just as superpowers evolve and the world economy shifts, we need to be a lot more enterprising to greet the uncertain future. The winds of change will be the only certainty and we must set sail ready to steer ahead, ride the waves, weather any storm and journey into the Way of the Sun. Together let us embrace 2012 and the future with the eagerness to make it a truly bright one.
